Google has unveiled its Year in Search 2023 rankings for Kenya, showcasing the individuals who captured the public’s attention the most during the year.
Politician Millicent Omanga secured a position among the top 10 most searched Kenyans in 2023. Following closely in second place is Pastor Ezekiel Odero, whose prominence surged after his arrest and the subsequent closure of his church due to its association with the Shakahola Cult massacre. The Shanzu court later dismissed the case against Ezekiel.
DJ Fatxo claimed the third spot on the list, while Social Media Influencer Georgina Njenga emerged as the fourth most searched individual. Pastor Mackenzie occupies the fifth position, having faced legal issues following incidents in the Shakahola forest.
Notably, Faith Kipyegon, the three-time world record holder in middle-distance running, clinched the sixth spot after achieving a historic victory in the World Athletics Championships, securing titles in both the 1500m and 5000m events. She became the first woman ever to accomplish a 1,500-5,000 meters double at the World Championships.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi secured the seventh position, having made headlines earlier in the year when he claimed that his residence was surrounded by the police. Subsequently, he presented himself to the office of the Director of Criminal Investigations.
In the eighth spot is former Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebulati, who remained in the public eye throughout the year due to the controversial August 2022 election results, leading to legal proceedings initiated by the Azimio La Umoja.
Chief Justice Marthe Koome claimed the ninth position, followed by Mathe Wa Ngara at number ten.
Beyond the Kenyan borders, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni gained global attention as he featured on the list of internationally searched figures. This recognition stemmed from his signing of an anti-LGBTQ+ law that included the death penalty for same-sex acts.
